Wilson Yeung Chun Wai is a Hong Kong born artist-curator, researcher and creative producer. Wilson holds a Master’s degree in art curating from the Department of Art History at the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) with distinction awarded by RMIT University. Wilson is a founder of RMIT Curatorial Collective, a collaborator of Independent Curators International (ICI), an alumnus of Shanghai Curators Lab at Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (SAFA) Shanghai University, and a researcher at RMIT University's Contemporary Art and Social Transformation (CAST) Research Group. In 2020, Wilson was selected by the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art to participate in the 4A Curators’ Intensive.
Wilson is undertaking a PhD by practice in RMIT's School of Architecture and Urban Design, addressing collective curatorial practices. His practice-based research investigates how curators and artists work collaboratively and collectively – as a form of collective curatorial practice – in the creation, development and installation of contemporary art exhibitions. The research seeks to adopt devised theatre approaches, especially the application of devising and improvisation, to develop collective curatorial techniques in contemporary art productions. Records of critical discourses and practices, observed from the process of collaborative experiments conducted between curators and artists in collective environment, provide insights into ‘curating energy’.
Wilson's works have been presented nationally and internationally, including at the Jogja Biennale, Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (UABB), International Multidisciplinary Printmaking Conference (IMPACT), Melbourne Fringe Festival, Ballarat International Foto Biennale, Pingyao International Photography Festival, Hong Kong International Photography Festival and Hong Kong Graphic Art Fiesta. His texts have appeared on the OnCurating Journal, Public Art Journal, Journal of Urban Culture Research, International Academic Forum (iafor) Archive and Journal of Public Space [forthcoming].
In addition, Wilson has 15 years' experience in curating, producing and coordinating arts and cultural events. The institutions he has served include RMIT University, The University of Sydney, Unlock Dancing Plaza, Centre for Community Cultural Development, The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation, Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation, Videotage, Microwave International New Media Arts Festival and Fotanian Open Studio. Wilson also held the position as research assistant at the Floating Time Chinese Prints, 1954- 2002 exhibition (2016), which was curated by Dr Stephen Whiteman and organized by the University of Sydney's University Art Gallery.
